CAIRO: China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, warned on Sunday that any moves towards Taiwan’s independence would be “harshly punished.” The warning comes in response to Taiwan’s recent presidential election, where Lai Ching-te secured victory.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry in Cairo, Wang Yi emphasized, “If anyone on the island of Taiwan thinks of going for independence, they will be trying to split apart China’s territory, and will certainly be harshly punished by both history and the law. This is a dead end.”

China asserts that there is only one China, and Taiwan is an integral part of it. Wang Yi reiterated, “Taiwan has never been a country. It was not in the past, and it certainly would not be in the future.”

Warning against efforts to pursue independence, Wang Yi emphasized that such actions would jeopardize the well-being of Taiwanese citizens, harm the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and pose a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait region.
