BEIJING: The National Forestry and Grassland Administration said on Thursday that China’s current wild giant panda population is around 1,900, a notable increase from around 1,100 in the 1980s.

Zhang Yue, an official with the administration, attributed this important growth to China’s intensified protection efforts.

According to Zhang, the Giant Panda National Park was set up in October 2021. It spans around 22,000 square kilometers and offers substantial protection to about 72 percent of the wild giant panda population.

The protected areas within the giant panda habitat have expanded from 1.39 million hectares in 2012 to 2.58 million hectares, effectively ensuring the safety and sustainable development of the wild panda population, as indicated by data from the administration. —Xinhua/APP
