NANJING: The Youon Technology Company Limited, a bike-producing company based in Changzhou, China, has announced the launch of a prototype of an innovative folding hydrogen-powered bicycle in the city of Changzhou, east China’s Jiangsu Province.

The bicycle has a similar shape to conventional bikes, but it is equipped with a low-pressure hydrogen storage device and a hydrogen fuel cell. The cell generates energy to drive the bike as its proton exchange membrane gets hydrogen from the hydrogen storage device.

Compared to conventional electric bikes that use lithium batteries, the hydrogen fuel cell has several advantages, including a longer service life. It is more environmentally friendly as it only produces water during operation.

Mass production of the bicycle is estimated in March

The new hydrogen-powered bike generates power according to the speed at which its rider pedals. It stops providing additional power at 24 kilometers per hour, its developer said.

The Youon Technology Co., Ltd. said the first batch of the new bikes would go into mass production in late March, and it is expected to reach an annual manufacturing capacity of 200,000 by 2025.
