DALIAN: A Chinese shipbuilding firm began building two 7,500-cubic meter liquefied carbon dioxide carriers for the Northern Lights, a part of a Norwegian carbon capture and storage project.

The Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company Limited, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, has designed and developed vessels for liquefied carbon dioxide shipping.

Each of these ships is about 130 meters long and 21.2 meters wide. The first one is scheduled to be delivered in 2024.

Ships to run on dual-fuel

The ships were specially designed to run on dual-fuel consisting of liquefied natural gas and light diesel oil, respectively, and are commissioned to be possibly used for the European carbon dioxide capture and storage program.

Accordingly, they will collect carbon dioxide formed by industries in European countries and transport it to the carbon dioxide getting terminal on the west coast of Norway for processing, before inserting it into the seabed for enduring storage at 2,600 meters deep. – APP
