ISLAMABAD: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday.

The leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

According to the Financial Times, the Chinese foreign minister said the restoration of mutual trust and the realisation of win-win cooperation between China and India meet the shared expectations of both peoples.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that last year, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan, setting the direction for the improvement and development of bilateral relations.

“Both sides agreed that, as two ancient civilisations and neighbouring major countries, China and India should trust, support, and achieve mutual success with each other,” a statement issued by the Chinese foreign ministry said.

Wang Yi further said following this, exchanges at all levels between the two countries have been steadily resumed.

“Relations on right track”

The special representatives for the border issue have reached a consensus on properly handling specific differences, he added.

Both sides should follow the consensus reached by the two heads of state, ensuring that bilateral relations remain on the right track. China is willing to work with India to plan the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, injecting new momentum into the development of bilateral ties.

“Hard-won progress”

Jaishankar, for his part, said that the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi in Kazan provided important guidance provided important guidance for rebuilding bilateral relations.

Exchanges between the two countries in various fields have gradually resumed, yielding significant results, he said according to the Financial Times.

“Building mutual trust between India and China is in the interests of both sides.”

India values the hard-won progress in improving bilateral relations and is willing to work with China to accelerate the restoration of cooperative mechanisms, enhance cultural exchanges, facilitate people-to-people ties, and jointly maintain peace and stability in the border regions, Jaishankar said.
