Chinese Foreign Minister to Visit Tunisia, Egypt

BEIJING: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Tunisia and Egypt this week as part of a four-country Africa tour before the top diplomat of China heads to Brazil and Jamaica.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Wang’s Africa visit, which will also include Cote d’Ivoire and Togo will take place from Jan.13 to 18.

Beijing has historically been sympathetic to the cause of Palestine and supportive of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an “international peace conference” to resolve the issue.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that it would “continue the traditional friendship between Africa and China and consolidate Africa-China solidarity and cooperation. Mao Ning added that from Jan. 18 to 22, Chinese FM will visit Brazil and Jamaica — two nations that “have the same positions on many global issues.

She added that they would take this opportunity to strengthen further the foundation of mutual political trust with the two nations and also deepen mutually beneficial friendly cooperation in several sectors.

Wang Yi’s overseas trip will coincide with a visit abroad by another top Chinese official, Prime Minister Li Qiang, this week.

Li Qiang will visit Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024 and carry out an official visit, the Foreign Ministry said. The Chinese Premier also visit Ireland, Mao said.
