BEIJING: A man in China was given a six-month prison term after being found guilty of frightening 1,100 chickens that belonged to his neighbour to death, the New York Post reporter. The odd deed was actually a part of his plan to exact revenge on his neighbour.

The disagreement between the man, named only by his last name Gu, and his neighbour Zhong had persisted ever since the latter cut down Gu’s trees without his consent in April 2022.

According to China Daily, Gu sneaked onto his neighbour Zhong’s chicken farm and scared the chickens with a torch until they started killing each other. His poultry panicked when they saw the torch, ran into a corner and died from the pressure.

Gu was arrested by police the same day 460 chickens were slaughtered. He was subsequently told to give Zhong 3,000 yuan (Rs 35,734), which further aggravated his animosity for Zhong. He wasn’t deterred and kept going after his retribution. He then returned to the site and carried out the same method to kill another 640 birds. The 1,100 deceased hens were valued by Chinese authorities at 13,840 yuan (Rs 1, 64,855).

Court’s ruling

According to China Daily, a court in the Hunan Province in central China determined on Tuesday that Gu had deliberately caused Zhong to lose the property. He was given a six-month prison term and a year of probation by the judge.
