Clashes Continue Over Land Dispute in Kurram Despite Ceasefire

PESHAWAR: Defying a ceasefire agreement, a dispute between two tribes in various areas of the tribal district Kurram continued on the fourth day on Monday.

The local administration and police said that clashes initially started in the Boshehra Dandar area of Parachinar and subsequently spread to Khar Kallay, Balishkhel, Pewar, and Teri Mengal over a disputed piece of Shamilat (common land).

In the past three days, the clashes have claimed at least nine lives, and about 38 people have been wounded. However, according to the latest reports, there were no casualties in the recent clashes. In the first two days of the conflict, five people were killed.

Casualties in Kurram Clashes

On Sunday, one person was killed in the Teri Mengal area, while three others were wounded in the Pewar area.

Moreover, one person was dead, and two others were wounded in the clashes in Balishkhel and Khar Kallay localities.

The wounded have been shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital IDHQ) in Parachinar and Sadda Hospital, with the condition of three critical.

Tribal leaders, along with Federal Minister Sajid Turi, police, and security forces have been trying to restore peace in the region.

On Sunday, they held a meeting with the elders of both tribes, which resulted in a ceasefire agreement. But, firing resumed last night, violating the agreement.

Kurram’s police chief Muhammad Imran said that joint efforts by the security forces and tribal leaders were underway and measures were being taken to bring the conflict under control.
