PESHAWAR: Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mahmood Khan, on Tuesday advised Governor Haji Ghulam Ali to dissolve the provincial assembly. With this move, Mahmood Khan has fulfilled the promise to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and paved the way for fresh elections.

The development came days after Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi dissolved Punjab Assembly after Governor Baligh-Ur-Rehman refrained from signing the summary sent to him.

KP Assembly dissolution

The PTI chief had announced the dissolution of the assemblies — Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — in November 2022. However, PTI delayed the plans due to consultations with allied parties and countermeasures adopted by the ruling coalition in the center.

Hours before the dissolution of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf approved the resignations of 35 MNAs of PTI.

Pervez Khattak, Asad Qaiser, Qasim Suri, Ali Amin Gandapur, Murad Saeed, Imran Khattak, and Shehryar Khan Afridi are among the lawmakers whose resignations have been accepted. The National Assembly speaker also accepted the resignation tendered by Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed.
