BOGOTA, Columbia: Colombian President Gustavo Petro recently announced the suspension of coal exports to Israel amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This decision comes as relations between the two countries, once close allies in military and commercial endeavors, have deteriorated significantly.

Petro made the announcement via social media, stating that coal exports would only resume once the “genocide” in Gaza ceased. He also referenced a draft decree indicating that exports would resume contingent upon Israel complying with a recent International Court of Justice order to withdraw its troops from Gaza.

Colombia’s National Statistics Department reveals that coal exports to Israel amounted to over $320 million in the first eight months of the previous year. Although this constitutes a small portion of Colombia’s overall coal exports, valued at over $9 billion in 2023, it significantly impacts Israel, which imports more than 50% of its coal from Colombia.

President Petro’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Israel in May, citing the Israeli government’s actions as “genocidal,” further underscores the strained relationship. Despite the diplomatic rift, consulates remain operational, and trade continues between the two nations.

Traditionally reliant on Israel for military equipment and expertise, Colombia’s decision has led to a halt in new military purchases. Critics argue that this move compromises Colombia’s security efforts against drug cartels and rebel factions. However, supporters applaud Petro’s stance, believing it will exert pressure on Israel to reconsider its policies in Gaza and the West Bank.

The Global Energy Embargo for Palestine, an advocacy group seeking to halt energy exports to Israel, commended Colombia’s decision, urging other nations to follow suit. South Africa, a significant coal exporter to Israel, has been urged to take similar action, potentially amplifying the impact of Colombia’s stance.

President Petro’s outspoken criticism of Israel contrasts with previous Colombian leaders’ policies. His refusal to initially condemn Hamas attacks preceding Israel’s invasion of Gaza underscores his firm stance against Israeli actions. As tensions persist, the international community watches closely for further developments in this evolving diplomatic rift.
