Committee Recommends Closure, Merger of Some State-Owned Entities

ISLAMABAD: The committee constituted to cut down the government’s expenses recommended on Wednesday to close, merge, or hand over some state-owned departments to provinces, introduce a contributory pension scheme for newly-appointed employees, and abolish the vacancies vacant for more than a year.

Led by the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and comprising of Cabinet members, Establishment, and Power secretaries, Dr Qaiser Bangali, Dr Farrukh Saleem and Muhammad Naveed Iftikhar, presented its preliminary report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif containing recommendations, short-and medium-term, during a meeting to discuss the reduction in government’s expenditures and the size of its infrastructure.

The committee advised engaging the private sector for service delivery in the departments of the government, besides banning unnecessary travel of government officials to slash expenditures by promoting teleconferencing.

It added, the government vehicles should be withdrawn from the officers availing the facility of monetization.

The prime minister formed a high-powered committee directing it to furnish a detailed report within 10 days, considering the best international practices.

Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed the hope that the recommendations by the committee would help save billions of rupees of the national exchequer.

Federal cabinet members Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Ali Pervaiz Malik, and PM’s Coordinator Rana Ehsan Afzal and relevant senior officers also attended the meeting.
