ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Commerce and Industries, Dr. Gohar Ejaz, on Wednesday said that the timely completion of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Karachi is the government’s top priority. He said that these SEZs played a critical role in creating an investment-friendly environment in the country.
The minister said this while chairing a high-level meeting to address the status of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Karachi. The meeting was also attended by other key officials, including Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Sauleh Ahmed Farooqui, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production Rashid Langrial, and Secretary of the Board of Investment Sohail Rajput.
The officials also discussed the operational status of the Port Qasim Special Economic Zone, which is now ready for prospective investors to offer an ideal environment for businesses to flourish.
Special Economic Zone for IT Sector
Meanwhile, the minister emphasized the importance of diversification and growth, particularly the timely establishment of a Special Economic Zone exclusively dedicated to the Information Technology (IT) sector, adding that the zone would play a decisive role in fostering innovation and technological advancement in the country.
He reiterated the need for proper incentivization of the public sector to ensure inclusive growth while emphasizing the requirement of sustained economic development and collaboration between the government and private sector.
The meeting also highlighted the possible initiatives to boost the skill set of the labour force in Pakistan.
The Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with other concerned authorities, plans to initiate and implement programs to improve the overall skill level of the workforce, with a special focus on IT skills.
This strategic approach would help boost IT exports and position Pakistan as a competitive player in the global IT industry.
