PARIS: Iran executed three men on Friday convicted of killing security force members during protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini last year, the judiciary said, drawing condemnation from world rights groups.

“Saleh Mirhashemi, Saeed Yaghoubi, and Majid Kazemi were found guilty of “moharebeh” or waging war against God” for killing three members of the security forces at a protest on November 16 in the central city of Isfahan,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website said.

Iran witnessed waves of countrywide protests after the death of 22-year-old Amini, an Iranian Kurd apprehended for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress rules for women.

Thousands of Iranians were detained during the protests, which Tehran commonly referred to as “riots” started by foreigners and during which hundreds of people died, including numerous members of the security forces.

The hangings on Friday bring to seven the total number of Iranians hanged linked with the demonstrations. Yaghoubi, Kazemi and Mirhashemi were detained in November and sentenced to death in January.

Mizan said, “They were also accused of having membership of “illegal groups involved to disrupt national security and collusion leading to crimes against internal security forces.”

It noted that the documents and evidence in the case and the accused’s clear statements showed that the shootings carried out by these three people martyrdom three security forces.
