ISLAMABAD: The Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar has strongly denounced the house detention of its head, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmir Media Service reported that the Anjuman expressed resentment that for the last four years, an important and holy event like Shab-e-Baraat is not being held at the Jamia Masjid because of the Mirwaiz’s house detention since 5 August 2019.

It said that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is subject to severe restrictions on his peaceful activities and is forbidden from carrying out his religious duties, which is unacceptable. According to the statement, it appears unlikely that the Mirwaiz will be permitted to give his sermon at the revered mosque on the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Baraat, despite repeated requests to the occupation authorities.

The Anjuman urged the administration to release Mirwaiz Umar Farooq unconditionally while considering the religious sentiments and feelings of thousands of followers who travel from all over the Kashmir Valley to the Jamia Masjid on Fridays but are left disappointed.
