DUBAI: The presidency of the forthcoming COP28 climate summit and two renewable energy organizations on Monday urged governments to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 as part of efforts to stop global warming exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Countries hope to reach an agreement on this capacity increase during the upcoming global climate negotiations, scheduled to commence in late November in Dubai. These negotiations will primarily focus on addressing the gaps in the implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which established the 1.5-degree Celsius temperature limit.

In a collaborative report, the COP28 presidency of the United Arab Emirates, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and the Global Renewables Alliance have proposed the need for renewable energy capacity to exceed 11,000 GW by 2030.

A majority of major economies, including the Group of 20 nations like China, the United States, and India, have already expressed their commitment to pursuing efforts to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030, concurring with this objective.

In the absence of prompt measures to reduce CO2 emissions, scientists warn that the Earth will breach the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold within the next decade, leading to more severe climate change impacts on humanity, wildlife, and ecosystems.

However, achieving a consensus among the nearly 200 countries participating in COP28 will be a challenging task. European countries and those particularly vulnerable to climate change insist that simply scaling up clean energy isn’t sufficient; they assert that nations must also commit to phasing out CO2-emitting fossil fuels, a proposition that faces opposition from economies heavily reliant on fossil fuels.

The report further advocates for a twofold increase in energy efficiency and emphasizes the importance of setting specific time-bound targets, robust regulatory frameworks, financial incentives, and awareness campaigns to support these endeavours.
