South African President Denies Corruption Charges

Cape Town: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is likely to face an impeachment threat over the “Farmgate” scandal. The African National Congress will hold its party executive committee meeting and some reports suggest that the issue of the president will be raised during the meeting.

Former official Arthur Fraser had filed a complaint with police accusing Cyril Ramaphosa of hiding a theft of 4m dollars from his Phala Phala farm in 2020. According to a leaked report from an independent panel, Ramaphosa had abused his position, and office and may have broken an anti-corruption law in the country. However, the president denied all allegations.

The Parliament to Take Decision on Impeachment Proceeding

It may be recalled that the parliament will take the decision to initiate an impeachment proceeding after examining the panel’s investigation. The panel had concluded that there were several unanswered questions and termed it as a very serious issue.

A team led by the former chief justice submitted its report to the National Assembly speaker at a televised ceremony in Cape Town on Wednesday. The panel was formed in September and assigned to ascertaining whether there was solid evidence to establish that the president violated the law.
