SAN JOSE: Costa Rica has formally charged former President Luis Guillermo Solis with corruption, alleging his involvement in an improper transfer of government funds to state-owned Bancredito in 2017.

The attorney general’s office stated that the transfer was made to create the illusion of sufficient liquidity for the bank, benefiting the government’s image.

Solis, who served as president from 2014 to 2018, has denied the charges. In a video posted on Twitter, the former center-left leader categorically rejected the accusations, emphasizing that his actions were always in accordance with the law and aimed at the country’s benefit, as well as the protection of Bancredito’s creditors and workers’ rights.

If convicted, Solis could face a maximum prison sentence of eight years, according to the attorney general’s office. The charges also extend to Helios Fallas, the former finance minister, Sergio Alfaro, the former minister of the presidency, and two senior finance ministry officials.

Alfaro has denied the charges, stating in a text message to Reuters, “I know I did not commit any crime.” Fallas chose not to directly comment on the charges, mentioning in a text message that the case had already undergone prosecution and refraining from further elaboration.

The legal proceedings against Solis and other officials highlight the Costa Rican government’s efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability within its public institutions.
