ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of the Pakistan Council of Islamic Ideology, Dr. Qibla Ayaz, has strongly condemned the recent incidents of setting churches on fire in Jaranwala, highlighting the disconnect between these actions and the fundamental principles of Islam and country laws.

In a formal statement, Dr. Ayaz firmly stated that the incidents in Jaranwala were in direct contradiction to the teachings of Islam, which emphasize reverence for places of worship and religious symbols regardless of faith.

“Our religion and our country ‘s laws are built upon the foundation of respect, tolerance, and coexistence,” Dr. Ayaz said. He further added that acts of violence, targeting individuals based on their beliefs, or resorting to vigilantism due to alleged religious blasphemy have no endorsement within the Islamic faith.

The chairman underscored the importance of pursuing legal remedies without bias or discrimination against any parties involved in inciting animosity and hatred.

“Regardless of motives, we are morally obligated by our faith and our Constitution to ensure justice prevails. Those who contribute to discord and hatred must be held accountable within the full scope of the law,” he emphasized.

Moreover, Dr. Ayaz urged the government to take immediate and comprehensive measures to restore the affected homes and places of worship. He emphasized the need for compensation to be provided to those who suffered losses to their private properties as a result of these distressing incidents.

Council of Islamic Ideology Recommendations

In December 2021, the Council, following the Sialkot incident, had proposed a series of recommendations for the government to thwart such incidents and stop the misuse places of worship to spread divisive ideologies in the future.

The recommendations include the formation of specialized courts to take up such incidents and operate around the clock, ensuring prompt and equitable trials.
