ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday directed the authorities concerned to shift Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan from Punjab’s Attock to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

IHC Chief Justice Aamir Farooq said it is clear the former prime minister deserves a better class in jail. His rights should not be violated, he added. The court was hearing the case of shifting Imran Khan from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

CJ Farooq remarked that according to the law, an under-trial prisoner of Islamabad should be detained in Adiala Jail. He asked why an under-trial prisoner was kept in the Attock Jail.

The chief justice further said that Imran Khan was kept in Attock Jail in the Toshakhana criminal case in which his sentence has been suspended. The court sought a response from the additional attorney general in this regard as well.

Additional Attorney General (AAG) Munawar Iqbal told the court that when the PTI chairman was arrested in the cipher case, the order mentioned the Attock Jail for detaining Imran Khan. Imran Khan’s lawyer Sher Afzal Marwat demanded that the former prime minister is a sportsman and should be provided with an exercise machine.

Earlier, superintendent Attock Jail declined to send PTI Chairman Imran Khan to appear before an Islamabad court owing to security concerns, as per sources.
