ISLAMABAD: A district and session court in Islamabad Thursday rejected appeals seeking suspension of the sentence handed down to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the iddat case.  Former Prime Minister and Bushra were each sentenced to 7 years in jail in February earlier this year following a trial court found their nikah to be fraudulent as Bushra’s ex-husband, moved the court against the marriage.

The court’s decision announced by Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka, comes after the hearing on appeals against the sentence.

While hearing appeal filed by Bushra Bibi’s former husband, a district magistrate on February 3 convicted Bushra Bibi and former Prime Minister and sentenced them to seven years in jail for contracting marriage on January 1, 2018, without Bushra Bibi first observing the mandatory waiting—iddat—period.

They had challenged the judicial magistrate’s order in the court of Islamabad District and Session Court. However, the judge on May 29 referred the case to the Islamabad High Court for its transfer to another court following Maneka expressed a lack of trust in him.

The Islamabad High Court later listed the case for hearing in the court of Islamabad Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka. On June 13, the IHC ordered the district and session court to decide the couple’s plea for suspension of their sentence within 10 days.
