ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court here on Tuesday rejected the post-arrest bail plea of Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in the case over allegedly making defamatory remarks against former president and Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

Judicial magistrate Umer Shabbir pronounced the judgement that had been reserved earlier in the day.

Rashid is expected to challenge the ruling in Islamabad High Court.

Rashid is currently held in Adiala Jail

The Awami Muslim League chief, who has previously held several ministries, has been languishing in Adiala Jail on a judicial remand for 14 days. He was initially arrested in a case for accusing PPP’s Zardari of plotting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s murder.

An FIR was registered against the politician at the complaint of a police officer Ashiq Ali from the Aabpara police station in Islamabad. Just a day later, Murree Police also registered an FIR against him on the same charges. According to the FIR, Rashid had threatened the police officials, saying he would not spare them.
