HONG KONG: Ambassador of Pakistan to China Khalil Hashmi has announced that after creating significant employment opportunities and adding 8,000MW of electricity and 800 kilometers of roads in its first phase of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the second part of the CPEC would evolve into a multidimensional corridor focused on growth, innovation, and inclusiveness.
Speaking at the 9th Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong, themed “Building a Connected, Innovative, and Green Belt and Road,” the ambassador outlined that CPEC-II would align with Pakistan’s “5Es” strategy—emphasizing exports, digital transformation, climate change, energy, and equity.
The summit brought together global leaders, business representatives, and industry experts to discuss the future of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), highlighting the role of global partnerships and sustainable development in capitalizing on Hong Kong’s unique advantages.
Ambassador Hashmi highlighted the rapid growth of Pakistan’s IT sector, driven by an expanding internet user base and increased cellular connectivity. He noted that while Pakistan’s fintech sector is still emerging, it offers significant opportunities for Hong Kong-based companies to introduce digital banking and blockchain solutions.
He stressed the growing demand for innovative financial solutions in Pakistan and emphasized the need for venture capital investments, which Hong Kong is well-positioned to provide.
The ambassador also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to sourcing 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. He pointed out the considerable potential in hydropower, solar, and wind energy, inviting Hong Kong’s financial institutions to partner in green energy projects.
Additionally, he highlighted the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under CPEC as promising locations for early investment by Hong Kong enterprises, particularly in manufacturing and logistics. During his visit to Hong Kong, Ambassador Hashmi engaged with local leaders and the media.
