Cricket: Canada Qualify for T20 World Cup for 1st Time

MONTREAL: Canadian cricket team qualified for the T20 World Cup for the first time in the cricket history following a 39-run win over Bermuda in Hamilton on Saturday secured them a spot in next year’s mega event.

With the victory, Canada and Bermuda finished level on points in the qualifying group, which also featured the Cayman Islands and Panama, but the Canadian side advanced due to a good run rate.

The 9th edition of the T20 World Cup, which has been expanded to twenty teams, will be played in the West Indies and United States in June.

Canada has earlier featured in the 50-over format cricket World Cup but has not qualified for any major mega tournament since 2011.

Navneet Dhaliwal’s helped Canadian set a total of 132 runs for four, with twenty runs coming off the last over, before they bowled out Bermuda for 93 runs in 16.5 overs.

Kaleem Sana and medium-pacer Jeremy Gordon picked up 3 wickets apiece for Canada as Bermuda lost the last 6 wickets for just 30 runs.
