KABUL: The outlawed terrorist organization Daesh or so-called Islamic State (IS) on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack on a passenger bus in Kabul, Western media reported.

According to the report the terrorist group claimed the responsibility through its Telegram account.

At least seven people were killed, and 20 others injured when an explosion ripped through a passenger bus in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood of Kabul, local authorities said. The explosion occurred in the western part of the city, marking the second such incident in the area within a fortnight.

Police spokesman Khalid Zadran said that the explosion on a civilian passenger bus, caused devastation and killed seven people while injuring 20 others. Security personnel arrived at the scene immediately and cordoned off the area. The security forces started an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.

UN envoy for Afghanistan calls for transparent investigation

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, expressing deep concern over the attack stressed the need for a full and transparent investigation into the incident.

In a statement posted on X, formerly twitter, he underscored the importance of identifying and holding the perpetrators accountable for their crimes.

The Dasht-e-Barchi area has been a target for extremist attacks in the past. All attacks have been claimed by Daesh, known for attacking schools, hospitals, and mosques.

In October, Daesh claimed responsibility for an attack in Dasht-e-Barchi, where a suitcase at a crowded place resulted in the deaths of at least four people and injured seven others.

Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the intensity of bomb blasts and suicide attacks has significantly decreased. However, occasional incidents such as the recent attack remind of the ongoing security challenges faced by Afghanistan.
