COPENHAGEN: A Copenhagen court ruled on Thursday that the man accused of assaulting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on a public square earlier this month will remain in custody until July 4.

The 39-year-old Polish man is suspected of punching Frederiksen on June 7 while she was walking in central Copenhagen, leaving her with a minor whiplash injury.

“The suspect will remain in custody until July 4,” stated a court official after a hearing lasting less than an hour.

The man, apprehended immediately after the incident, has denied involvement and claims no recollection of the event.

Following the assault, Frederiksen, 46, underwent a medical examination that revealed a “contusion on her right shoulder and a minor whiplash injury,” as per her office’s statement. A medical certificate was submitted to the court during Thursday’s proceedings.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Frederiksen and several witnesses have been interrogated by the police.

In her statement to police, conveyed to the court on Thursday, Frederiksen described the man approaching her, making incomprehensible remarks, and then striking her shoulder with a closed fist, according to Danish news agency Ritzau.

Prosecutor Line Steffensen revealed that the man was intoxicated and had stolen alcohol from a store just before encountering the prime minister. She also said that the man had prior arrests for shoplifting since relocating to Denmark five years ago.

Frederiksen, who became Denmark’s youngest-ever prime minister in 2019 at the age of 41 and won re-election in 2022, expressed feeling “shaken” after the attack and refrained from participating in the final day of campaigning for the EU election.
