ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) deadline for filing nomination papers for the general election 2024 scheduled for February 8 ended today (Sunday) at 4:30 pm local time.
With just over a month left until the polls, the electoral watchdog has transitioned into full election mode after issuing the election schedule on December 15, bringing an end to uncertainties surrounding the exercise.
Originally scheduled to conclude on December 23, the deadline was extended to December 24 in response to requests from political parties and to facilitate the candidacy process. Political parties were required to submit priority lists for special seats to returning officers within the stipulated time.
Returning officers will examine the nomination papers from December 25 to December 30, as specified in the election schedule. All activities listed in the election schedule released on December 15 will proceed as planned, according to the ECP.
Preparations for General Election 2024
According to the schedule, the last date for filing appeals against the RO’s decision to reject or accept nomination papers is January 3, with the last date for deciding the appeals by an appellate tribunal set for January 10.
The revised list of candidates will be published on January 11, and the last date for withdrawing candidature is January 12. Election symbols will be allotted to political parties on January 13, with polls set for February 8.
Several political figures, including PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and leader Maryam Nawaz, PTI leader Hammad Azhar, PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif, IPP leader Aleem Khan, and others, have submitted their nomination papers for various constituencies, marking the active engagement of political parties in the election process.
