KABUL: Afghan province of Nuristan was struck by an avalanche claiming lives of at least six individuals and trapping approximately 30 more.

Jamiullah Hashimi, the provincial head of information and culture, revealed that heavy snowfall persists, hampering rescue efforts and potentially increasing the death toll.

The avalanche descended upon the village of Nakre in the Tatin valley of Nuristan during Sunday night, burying homes beneath layers of snow and debris.

Reports indicate that around 20 houses bore the brunt of destruction or sustained significant damage due to the disaster. With rescue operations underway, the situation remains precarious, exacerbated by ongoing snowfall and the challenging terrain.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the perilous conditions faced by Afghan communities during harsh winter weather, highlighting the urgent need for swift and effective disaster response measures to mitigate further loss of life.
