MOSCOW: Tensions escalate between Russia and Ukraine as a Ukrainian strike allegedly claims at least 14 lives and injures 108 in the Russian city of Belgorod. The incident follows a series of Russian strikes on Ukraine, causing dozens of casualties.

Situated approximately 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, Belgorod has been a frequent target of what Russia claims is indiscriminate shelling by Ukrainian forces. Unverified footage circulating online depicts debris-littered streets, burnt-out cars, and billowing smoke in the city center, capturing the aftermath of the deadly strike.

Russia’s emergencies ministry reports that among the casualties are 12 adults and two children, with an additional 108 people, including 15 children, sustaining injuries. President Vladimir Putin has been briefed on the incident, and the Kremlin asserts that the attack “will not go unpunished.” The Russian defence ministry issues a stern warning in response.

In a diplomatic move, Russia requests a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address what it alleges is a lethal Ukrainian strike on Belgorod. Moscow’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, confirms the request, signaling a renewed focus on the conflict at the international level.

As both nations engage in accusations and counter-accusations, the situation on the ground remains tense, with the latest strike intensifying the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
