KARACHI: The 34th death anniversary of prominent Pakistani folk singer Muhammad Jumman Khan is being observed today. Born into a family of musicians on October 10, 1935, Jumman Khan left an indelible mark on the music industry.
Jumman Khan’s musical journey was closely tied to Radio Pakistan, where he initially performed in Karachi and later at the Hyderabad radio station. It was during his tenure at the Hyderabad station that he had the opportunity to showcase his talent not only as a singer but also as a composer.
With a repertoire spanning hundreds of Sindhi, Balochi, and Saraiki songs and ghazals, Jumman Khan gained nationwide recognition for his rendition of ‘Yar Dadhi Ishq Aatish.’ His fame extended beyond borders, as he performed in countries like India, Bangladesh, Japan, Australia, and many others.
His contributions to music were acknowledged with several prestigious awards, including the Pride of Performance, Shah Abdul Latif, and Sachal Sarmast awards. Esteemed singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Noor Jehan, and Abida Parveen praised his remarkable talent.
Even former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was an admirer, regularly inviting Jumman Khan to his gatherings. The legacy of this musical maestro continues to resonate, reminding us of his immense contribution to the rich cultural tapestry of Pakistan. Jumman Khan passed away on January 24, 1990 in Karachi.
