TAMIL NADU, India: The death toll from consuming tainted liquor in Tamil Nadu has reached 54, with over 100 individuals still hospitalized.

Since June 19, nearly 200 people have experienced severe symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea after consuming methanol-laced alcohol in Kallakurichi, located 250 km from Chennai.

Authorities have arrested seven individuals in connection with the incident and are cracking down on local liquor sellers and brewers. Methanol, typically used for industrial purposes, is highly toxic and often found in illegally produced alcohol, which remains a persistent issue in India.

The state government is intensifying efforts to identify and prosecute those involved in the production of the tainted liquor.
