MANILA: The death toll from the deadly landslide that struck a mining town in Davao de Oro province of the Philippines on February 6 has reached 92, local authorities reported on Thursday.

The provincial government of Davao de Oro announced on social media that rescuers are still searching for 36 missing individuals.

Leah Anora from the Department of Interior and Local Government stated at a press conference in Maco, where the tragedy unfolded that 32 people sustained injuries but survived.

Among the victims are workers from a mining company who were trapped inside two buses buried by rocks, mud, and trees that cascaded from the mountainside. These buses were used to transport workers to and from the mining site.

The Philippines holds the top position in the World Risk Index 2022 for being the most disaster-prone country globally.

Situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the archipelago frequently faces powerful typhoons, leading to flash floods and landslides, along with seismic activities like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
