NEW DELHI: The air quality in Delhi has reached hazardous levels after the Diwali festival crossed the safe limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to data Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi is above 400 in many parts of the city, which is far beyond the safe limits.

On Sunday, the city was covered by dense smog, with AQI levels crossing 500 in some areas like Anand Vihar, where pollution hit “hazardous” levels. In Alipur, Punjabi Bagh, and RK Puram regions the AQI ranged between 300 and 400.

According to statistics from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the pollution in the Indian capital has reached alarming levels escalating from 327 to 447 overnight.

Such high levels pose serious health risks, causing respiratory issues and affecting daily life, especially in high-risk areas like Alipur and Anand Vihar. The PM2.5 concentrations are now more than 65 times above the WHO’s recommended limits.

This increase in pollution is not uncommon. After Diwali celebrations, Delhi has often seen severe dips in air quality because of fireworks, construction dust, and industrial emissions.

Residents of Delhi are urged to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
