LAHORE: Dense fog shrouded the cities of central Punjab, including Lahore, leading to reduced visibility, accidents, and complicating navigation on Thursday morning.
The intensity of the fog caused the motorway to be closed for traffic at many places. People said that even fog lights were ineffective in many areas.
Dense fog on the Grand Trunk (GT) Road led to a significant accident near Chungi No 5 in Jhelum in the early hours of Thursday, leaving 30 individuals wounded.
Approximately 10 vehicles collided with each other as the visibility turned almost zero due to fog. Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot after being informed and shifted the injured to hospital. Five of the injured were in critical condition, according to rescue sources.
In a separate incident, a car carrying a family from Narowal to Lahore plunged into a nullah in Chungi Amar Sadhu, leading to one person being killed.
The director general of Rescue 1122 urged the public to exercise punctuality on the roads, emphasizing that rushing contributed to numerous accidents. He also advised people to pause their journeys during dense fog rather than attempting to push through.
The director general highlighted the additional challenge of inaccessibility for rescue vehicles due to the fog, which could hinder their timely arrival at the accident site.
