ISLAMABAD: Setting a new world record partnership in men’s franchise T20 cricket, Dhaka Capitals openers Tanzid Hasan Tamim (108 in 64 balls, including eight sixes and six fours) and Litton Das (125 not out in 55 balls with nine sixes and 10 fours) put on an opening stand of 241 in 19.3 overs.
They were playing against Durbar Rajshahi in a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 match at the Sylhet International Stadium on Monday. Dhaka eventually finished on 254-1 and bowled out Rajshahi for 105.
This is a world-record partnership for any wicket in franchise T20 cricket.
Tanzid and Litton broke the previous record of 229 runs for the second wicket, set by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers for Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru) against the Gujarat Lions in the 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL).
In all men’s T20 matches, the record still lies with the Japanese openers Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming and Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake, who batted through the full 20 overs to set an unbroken partnership of 258 runs against China in the 2024 East Asia Cup.
Before the Tanzid-Litton stand, the highest partnership in the BPL was for the second wicket, between Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum (201) of the Rangpur Riders against the Dhaka Dynamites, back in the 2017 BPL final.
The highest opening partnership in the BPL prior to this was 197 runs, set by Khulna’s Shahriar Nafees and Lu Vincent against Rajshahi in 2013.
The world partnership record in women’s T20s is held by Albertina Galan and Lucia Taylor of Argentina who added 350 against Chile in 2023-24. Outside international matches, the record lies with the South Western Districts openers Tabitha la Grange and Tazmin Brits, who added an unbroken 207 runs against Free State Women in the 2023-24 CSA women’s Division One T20.
