GILGIT-BALTISTAN, Pakistan: As the winter season settles in across much of the world, including Pakistan, people are eager to hug the charm of this season by spending quality time in nature’s embrace.

If visitors seek to explore enchanting valleys, serene deserts, majestic mountains, melodious streams, and stunning lakes, a visit to Pakistan’s northern regions is a must.

Particularly, the Gilgit-Baltistan area offers an unparalleled natural splendour that captivates visitors from both within the country and abroad.

Renowned for the world’s most impressive mountain ranges— the Karakoram, Hindukush, and the Himalayas—this region is also home to Pakistan’s pride, including K2, the second-highest peak in the world, and Nanga Parbat.

Additionally, it boasts the awe-inspiring Siachen Glacier, the largest in the region, and the magnificent Deosai Plateau, which sits 14,000 feet above sea level, offering visitors an unforgettable experience amidst nature’s fresh beauty.

The overwhelming Karakoram Highway, meticulously carved through towering mountains, is a testament to human imagination and the region’s beauty.

Scattered across Gilgit-Baltistan are countless pristine lakes, each offering a glimpse of nature’s untouched splendour.

The towering pines, standing tall against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, further amplify the serene atmosphere that has long captivated nature lovers.

This remarkable region is a living canvas of natural beauty, continually praised for its unparalleled charm and peaceful environment.

But, despite all the natural beauty and loveable scenes of the region, the potential for winter tourism is yet to be completely tapped and numerous destinations are yet to be either completely explored or developed to attract more tourists.

According to the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), approximately 46% of foreign tourists visit Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).Winter Wonders of Gilgit-Baltistan: A Paradise for Nature, Adventure SeekersThe PTDC reported a steady increase in tourist numbers to the region over the past several years, with 16,130 visitors recorded in 2023 alone.

The only decline in tourism occurred in 2020, largely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The PTDC also shared data highlighting the most popular destinations within GB during 2023.Winter Wonders of Gilgit-Baltistan: A Paradise for Nature, Adventure SeekersWinter in GB offers yet another chance to immerse in nature’s wonders, with activities such as festivals, snowboarding, skiing, and trekking, all while benefiting the local communities.

According to the official GB Tourism website, the Shaman Festival will be held on December 15th, featuring events in Bagrote and Gilgit.

Visitors can enjoy traditional Shaman dances, Shaap performances, and a variety of local foods. Additionally, Jashn-e-Mayfang will take place on December 21st, showcasing cultural dresses, juniper fires, and a spectacular balloon display.

Gilgit-Baltistan has immense potential for winter tourism and sports, with the Sevendays Winter Feast being a prime example.

This event, organized in collaboration with local stakeholders and the community, promotes winter tourism in the region. Scheduled for December and January, the Sevendays Winter Feast will feature exciting activities like Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, Curling, and traditional indigenous games such as Basra, Pinduk, and Balbat.
