MANIPUR: A deeply disturbing video depicting a man allegedly being burned alive in Manipur has surfaced on the internet, raising concerns and prompting an investigation.

However, it is important to note that this video does not appear to be recent, but rather a five-month-old recording.

On October 8, a seven-second video labeled “Kuki” began circulating in various WhatsApp groups across Manipur, as reported by The Hindu. The video portrayed an individual dressed in a black T-shirt and camouflage trousers, lying in a trench. The person’s face appeared to have suffered severe injuries, and the body was engulfed in flames. It remains unclear whether the man was subjected to being burned alive.

Official confirmation from the Manipur government regarding the incident is currently unavailable. However, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has refuted claims made by tribal groups regarding the video. A spokesperson from the Kuki-Zo community mentioned ongoing efforts to establish the victim’s identity, as there have been allegations suggesting that five or six individuals from their community may have suffered a similar fate during the violence that erupted in May.

In response to the viral video, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) strongly criticized the government. They stated, The loss of life in this incident is profoundly tragic and casts a shadow of shame. While Prime Minister Modi expresses condolences for events in neighboring countries, the situation in Manipur remains unaddressed. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi conveyed her deep dismay and apprehension about another distressing video from Manipur. In this video, a tribal man’s body is shown being set on fire in a trench. According to a police official, the video seems to date back to early May. The pressing issues in Manipur continue to be overlooked, and there is a need to reassess priorities.

The state of Manipur has been marred by ethnic clashes since May 3, with more than 180 people losing their lives and several hundreds sustaining injuries. The violence erupted following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The situation remains a source of concern and requires thorough investigation and resolution to ensure peace and stability in the region.
