DOHA: Qatar has condemned in the strongest terms the assassination of Dr. Ismail Haniyeh, leader of Hamas, in Tehran, and considered it a dangerous escalation, and a flagrant violation of global and humanitarian law.

In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the assassination and the reckless Israeli behaviour in continuing to target civilian population will lead to the region slipping into a circle of confusion and also undermine the chance for peace.

The statement further reminded its solid stance rejecting violence, terrorism and criminal actions, including political assassinations, regardless of the motives and reasons. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the condolences of the leadership and people of Qatar to the families of Ismail Dr. Haniyeh and his companion, and to Palestine and its people.

Similarly, Russia strongly condemned the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, calling it an “unacceptable political murder” that will exacerbate tension in the region.

Russia’s state-run news agency, RIA Novosti cited Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov as saying “This is all very bad. This is a categorically deplorable political murder, and it will lead to further escalation of regional tension.”  Bogdanov warned that this will have a significant negative impact on the Doha talks.

Turkey also denounced the “shameful assassination” of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, the foreign affairs ministry said on Wednesday.  Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement, “We denounce the assassination of the leader of Hamas’s political office, Ismail Haniyeh, in a shameful assassination in Tehran, Iran.”  The statement said that the that this attack also aims to spread the Gaza conflict to a regional dimension.
