WASHINGTON: If you’re dealing with stained or chipped teeth, you may be considering veneers—customized dental coverings that can enhance your smile without extensive procedures.
However, dental professionals are cautioning against a troubling trend: unlicensed practitioners offering cheap veneers. These self-proclaimed “veneer techs” often market their services on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, advertising complete sets of veneers at prices significantly lower than those charged by licensed dentists. Some even offer training courses for aspiring technicians, despite lacking legitimate qualifications.
Such practices are not only misleading but also illegal. Recently, Georgia authorities arrested Brandon Diller, who falsely promoted himself as “Atlanta’s top veneer specialist,” for practicing dentistry without a license and selling fake training certifications.
Veneers are thin, custom-made coverings designed to conceal minor flaws or gaps in teeth. Unlike crowns or implants, veneers are primarily cosmetic and typically aren’t covered by insurance. The cost for veneers usually ranges from $1,000 to $2,000 per tooth, depending on the materials used. The application process involves removing some enamel, making it irreversible, and veneers last between 5 to 15 years before needing replacement.
Receiving veneers from unlicensed individuals can lead to serious health issues, including pain, nerve damage, and tooth loss. Improper procedures might not screen for existing dental problems, risking further damage to teeth. For safer alternatives, consider over-the-counter whitening kits or composite materials for minor repairs.
To avoid unqualified providers, look out for those promoting themselves as “veneer technicians” and operating outside licensed dental offices. Many offer their services at beauty salons or private homes. Always verify the credentials of dental professionals through authentic resources.
