ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office (FO) of Pakistan has reiterated that its ongoing operation against illegal immigrants within the country is not specifically targeted at individuals of any particular nationality.

This clarification was provided during the FO’s weekly Press briefing held in Islamabad.

The backdrop to this statement is the recent ultimatum issued by Pakistan’s caretaker government, which called on all undocumented immigrants, including Afghan nationals, to leave Pakistan by October 31. Those who do not comply risk facing imprisonment and deportation to their respective countries.

The decision to initiate this operation was made during an apex committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar and attended by the army chief, among others. The committee also discussed implementing stricter border controls, requiring passports and visas for cross-border movement, and limiting the acceptance of electronic Afghan identity cards (e-tazkiras) to October 31.

This development prompted a response from Afghan authorities, with the Afghan Taliban’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, expressing that the policy was “unacceptable” and calling for a reconsideration.

In her remarks during the Press briefing, FO Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch clarified the objectives of the ongoing operation. She stated that the operation aims to repatriate individuals who have either overstayed their visas or lack the necessary valid documents to remain in Pakistan. Baloch emphasized that Pakistan is operating within the boundaries of its domestic laws and sovereignty while conducting this action.

Importantly, Baloch emphasized that this operation is distinct from the situation involving the 1.4 million Afghan refugees who have been hosted by Pakistan for many decades. She underscored Pakistan’s generosity and hospitality towards these refugees despite its own economic constraints.

The FO spokesperson also reiterated that Pakistan’s national policy regarding Afghan refugees remains unchanged. Pakistan continues to engage with Afghanistan to create a conducive and safe environment for the honorable repatriation of Afghan refugees.

Pakistan’s ongoing operation against illegal immigrants is being carried out without discrimination based on nationality. It primarily targets individuals who have overstayed their visas or lack proper documentation, while the country remains committed to its policy of hosting Afghan refugees with generosity and hospitality. The government’s goal is to ensure compliance with its domestic laws and regulations regarding immigration.
