DUBAI: A British-owned cargo ship faced a drone attack, sustaining minor damage on its port side at the Yemeni coast.
The Barbados-flagged vessel was targeted west of Hodeida, a strategic port city in Yemen. Maritime security firm Ambrey reported the incident, noting that the ship executed evasive maneuvers and increased its speed to navigate away from the attackers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the crew.
The Houthi, who control significant portions of Yemen, have been engaging in a series of actions targeting Red Sea shipping.
This particular attack comes amidst their ongoing protest against the Israel-Hamas war. The Houthi have been accused of disrupting maritime activities in the region, prompting responses from international forces.
In the aftermath of the drone attack, the damaged cargo ship continued its journey southward, proceeding toward the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The incident underscores the escalating tensions and security challenges faced by vessels navigating the Red Sea, especially those in proximity to Yemen’s coastline.
While the Houthi have not been officially designated as a terrorist organization by the United States or the United Kingdom, their actions have triggered reprisals from American and British forces.
This includes recent joint air strikes against Houthi targets in response to their persistent attacks on shipping in the region.
As the situation unfolds, concerns persist over the safety of maritime activities in the Red Sea, with the international community closely monitoring developments and responding to ensure the security of vital waterways.
