ARBIL: Authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan have said that two drones struck a military base in the autonomous region, Western media reported on Sunday.
Media reports citing the regional government’s statement said that the attack on the base in Arbil province caused some damage but there were no casualties.
The regional forces are allies of the US-led coalition that has troops in Iraq.
Since the war between Israel and Hamas started on October 7, there has been an increase in attacks on US forces and their allies in Iraq and neighbouring Syria.
Islamic Resistance in Iraq claim majority of attacks
The majority of the attacks have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose alliance of armed groups that oppose US support for Israel in the war on Gaza.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for a drone attack on Sunday afternoon, which it said was aimed at US-led coalition forces at Arbil airport. The authorities in the area said the drone was shot down.
Since October 17, US military officials have counted 106 attacks against American troops stationed in Iraq and Syria.
The prime minister of Kurdistan, Masrour Barzani, said he was deeply concern by Saturday’s drone attack.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter he strongly condemned the outlaws and their collaborators.
The regional government said these groups are being provided financial support by the federal government in Baghdad, with which it has strained ties.
The government of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said he had ordered a thorough investigation into this criminal attack.
