DUBAI, UAE: Dubai International Airport (DXB) achieved a significant milestone in the first half of 2024, welcoming a record 44.9 million travelers.
This performance marks a strong recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and positions DXB to potentially surpass its all-time passenger record of 89.1 million set in 2018. The surge in travel reflects a broader aviation boom and underscores Dubai’s growing role as a global aviation hub.
Dubai’s successful rebound is further evidenced by Emirates, the airport’s flagship carrier, reporting record-breaking annual profits. The city’s appeal is not only as a transit point but also as a major destination, driven by a real estate boom and unprecedented tourism numbers.
Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths highlighted the airport’s strategic significance, noting that the high passenger volume underscores Dubai’s global standing. Forecasts predict that DXB will handle approximately 91.8 million passengers by the end of 2024, surpassing the pre-pandemic peak.

In line with Dubai’s expansive growth plans, the city aims to shift operations to the nearly $35 billion Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central. This new facility, planned to feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, will alleviate congestion at DXB and accommodate future growth. The development of Al Maktoum International reflects Dubai’s ongoing ambition to enhance its aviation infrastructure and solidify its status as a premier global travel hub.
