Dynamic Chinese Pair Advances to ATX Open Quarterfinals

AUSTIN: Yue Yuan and her compatriot Yafan Wang secured comprehensive victories in the second round in the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, local media reported on Thursday. Yuan triumphed over Taylor Townsend of the United States with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) score line, rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to dominate the tiebreaker with a commanding 5-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Wang exhibited strong defensive play, saving nine of 10 break points en route to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Emiliana Arango of Colombia. The stage is now set for an intriguing quarterfinal clash between Wang and Yuan.

In other matches, top-seeded Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine breezed past Camila Osorio of Colombia 6-1, 6-2, while French fifth seed Diane Parry overcame Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Over at the Cymbiotika San Diego Open, Australia’s Daria Saville staged a remarkable comeback after dropping the first set against Germany’s Tatjana Maria. Despite facing a match point at 4-5 in the second set, Saville rallied in the tiebreaker, winning seven consecutive points to level the match before ultimately clinching a 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-2 triumph.

Elsewhere, Marta Kostyuk, the No. 6 seed from Ukraine, secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Australian Taylah Preston.

Later in the day, two anticipated matches were slated, featuring second-seeded Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia against Great Britain’s Katie Boulter, and top-seeded American Jessica Pegula facing off against Jule Niemeier of Germany.
