WASHINGTON: The Earth is currently facing its inaugural “extreme” geomagnetic storm since 2003, as a US agency said in a statement on Friday.

According to the NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, “EXTREME (G5) conditions reached Earth at 6:54 pm EDT.” The agency further cautioned that the geomagnetic storming is anticipated to endure throughout the weekend due to the presence of several additional Earth-directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) currently in transit.

As per media reports, the most intense solar storm in recorded history, in 1859, provoked auroras in central America and even Hawaii. NOAA space weather forecaster Shawn Dahl stated that they are not predicting that” but it could come close.
