BEIJING: At least eight people killed in an earthquake that hit northwest China on late Monday said local authorities on Tuesday.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter Scale in China’s Gansu-Qinghai border area.
According to the Chinese state media rescue work was ongoing.
The EMSC said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 11 kilometers at 23:59 p.m. local time and the epicenter of the quake was at a distance of 101 kilometers west-southwest of Lanzhou, China.

The epicenter initially identified at 35.730 degrees south latitude and 102.790 degrees west longitude.
The seismic activity was felt in Lanzhou and Linxia cities of China in bordering region.
