ISLAMABAD: As the upcoming general elections approach, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that the printing of ballot papers will be completed by February 2.
Simultaneously, the electoral body has initiated the distribution of ballot papers with the assistance of security personnel across all provinces.
According to an ECP spokesperson the preparations for the polls on February 8 are in full swing, . Currently, three government press institutes are engaged in printing ballot papers, and the process is going smoothly.
The spokesperson stated that the printing, which commenced on January 16 after the allocation of election symbols by returning officers (ROs), will conclude by February 2.
ROs and district administrations have commenced the delivery of ballot papers to the four provinces with the support of security agencies, utilizing both road and air transportation.
Additionally, the ECP has introduced a 8300 SMS service from January 29, allowing the general public to obtain information about their polling station and other relevant details by sending their identity card number to 8300.
To ensure a smooth voting experience, the ECP has completed the training of 96% of the required polling staff, with the remaining 6,000 personnel set to undergo training in the next four days.
In response to reports suggesting a ‘Fatwa’ prohibiting women from campaigning in Kohistan, the commission promptly sought clarification, and the district monitoring officer confirmed that it was a misconception.
The ECP emphasizes that any impediment to a woman’s campaigning or voting could result in legal action under Section 9 of the Elections Act, potentially leading to the nullification of the election results in that constituency.
The ECP has also taken notice of clashes and gunfire between two political parties in Karachi related to flag hoisting and postal ballot snatching in the Swabi district.
The commission has directed the chief secretary and the concerned Inspector General for presenting reports about the action taken against those involved, in accordance with election laws.
