ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday issued bailable arrest warrants for former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and other party leaders including Fawad Chaudhry and Asad Umar after they failed to appear before the electoral watchdog.

The ECP dismissed all appeals of the PTI including the request from the former PM to seek immunity from appearing in person in a contempt proceedings case.

Last week, the Supreme Court allowed the Election Commission of Pakistan to continue its proceedings against the PTI chief and other party leaders over controversial remarks against the electoral body.

‘Biased’: PTI on ECP ruling

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary slammed ECP’s arrest warrants, calling it a “biased decision that is tantamount to contempt of the high court’s decision.”

Immediately after the Election Commission of Pakistan announced its verdict against PTI, Chaudhary responded to it on Twitter by saying that “This is another biased decision by these dwarf members of the Election Commission. We will file a contempt of court case in the High Court.”

The ECP, in August and September, had issued contempt notices against the PTI chief and several other party members for allegedly using ‘intemperate’ language against the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commission of Pakistan and asked PTI members to appear before the commission, in person or through their counsels, and explain their position.
