ISLAMABAD: The Secretary Establishment has formally requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to reconsider its decision to remove Inspector General (IG) Akbar Nasir Khan and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon from their respective positions.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja heard the matter. During the proceedings, the Secretary Establishment informed the Election Commission about the progress in the case, highlighting that the Ministry of Interior has issued a report on incidents of terrorism by the Intelligence Bureau. Additionally, there is a report addressing law and order issues in Islamabad.
The Secretary further stated that Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar has granted permission for the replacement of both the IG and DC in Islamabad.
Responding to the Secretary’s request, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja expressed the commission’s intention to review the Ministry of Home Affairs report. He suggested that a panel be constituted to evaluate candidates for both posts and requested the Secretary to present the panel by the following day.
It’s noteworthy that the Election Commission of Pakistan had recently issued orders for the removal of IG Islamabad Akbar Nasir Khan and DC Irfan Nawaz Memon. Despite repeated directives over several months, the Establishment Division had not implemented the orders until now. The Election Commission’s decision has prompted a formal plea for reconsideration in light of the provided reports and the Prime Minister’s approval for the proposed changes.
