Vote Counting Starts in Tense Ecuador Election

Reports said that the vote counting is underway in the country. Early results are expected later, but it could take days to begin.

Earlier, a presidential candidate was also assassinated in Ecuador. Some candidates said that their election campaigns have been spoiled by gunfire. The election was called following President Guillermo Lasso dissolved the country’s parliament to prevent his impeachment.

The new head of the state will assume office on 26 October and will serve only the remainder of Lasso’s term, a year and a half. The assassination of candidate Fernando Villavicencio earlier this month in the country’s capital has made the poll difficult to forecast.
