ISLAMABAD: Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) therapy is becoming increasingly recognized as a non-invasive treatment for various cardiac conditions, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, and elevated lipid levels.

According to Cardiologist Dr. Raja Mehdi Hassan, during EECP therapy, blood is gently pushed from the lower body and limbs to the upper body, defying the natural blood flow.

Painless Nature of EECP Therapy

Referred to as the “natural bypass,” EECP therapy stands out for its painless nature and absence of surgical procedures or interventions.

He explained that patients’ heart rhythm, oxygen saturation, irregularities, and blood pressure are closely monitored throughout the one-hour session.

Prior to treatment, a comprehensive diagnosis, including electrocardiograms (ECG), echocardiography, CT angiography, or angiography, guides physicians in assessing heart conditions.

A course of 35 sessions is typically recommended for optimal outcomes, regardless of the specific ailment, adding that those who are unable to travel can opt for two sessions daily following the initial five sessions.

Dr. Mehdi emphasized that atherosclerosis can begin as early as age 20, particularly in individuals with a family history of heart disease, hypertension, and obesity.

Atherosclerosis, which involves blockages in blood vessels, can lead to conditions like coronary artery disease.

He stressed the importance of monitoring blood pressure, sugar levels, lipid profiles, and Body Mass Index (BMI) for everyone, regardless of medical history.

Individuals aged above 40 and those over 50 with health concerns should consider CT angiography to prevent sudden cardiac arrests.

Endorsed by the FDA, American College of Cardiology, and European College of Cardiology, EECP is gaining popularity in developing nations prior to bypass surgeries and angioplasties.

While the United States and India have numerous EECP centers, access to this therapy in Pakistan is primarily available in major metropolitan areas.
